Now that summer’s worst heat is waning, Texans’ thoughts turn to the outdoors — to escaping the pressures of everyday life and sharing an adventure together as a family. But that can be expensive.

For a family of four, the cost of a vacation out of state or far from home is often too high to justify. As I was growing up in Houston, my family couldn’t possibly afford plane tickets for all of us to travel for leisure.

We were, however, able to load up our car and drive the 300 miles to Garner State Park, near my abuela’s hometown of Sabrina. There, my abuela waded into the river, my uncles fished until the sun went down, and we kids ran around until the summer heat wore us out and we fell asleep under the stars…
